The Top Reason You Can't Lose Weight

The Top Reason You Can’t Lose Weight

Are you struggling to lose weight? Has it been a personal goal for a long time, but you can’t seem to achieve it? There is a common and very valid reason why most people find themselves in a weight loss battle.

Like most American women, you are probably very busy juggling life. No doubt, there is more to juggle some months than others and maintaining a commitment to yourself and your health can get hard to do consistently. You may know what you need to do to lose weight. You probably know what is considered healthy food and what is not. You probably know enough about exercise to help yourself through a weekly routine. So, what’s the common obstacle preventing you and millions of others from losing weight? Here is a conversation I had with a client recently. Judy passionately explained to me she knows exactly what to do to lose weight, as she’s done it successfully before. She knows she feels better and thrives when eating healthier. So, she asked me, “Why can’t I stick to it now? What is wrong?” My answer was, “You are human!” As humans, we like camaraderie, we like support, and we absolutely thrive when someone is in our corner. A study on accountability by the Association for Talent Development found the following probabilities of completing a goal by taking these actions:

  • Having an idea or goal: 10% likely to complete the goal
  • Consciously deciding that you will do it: 25%
  • Deciding when you will do it: 40%
  • Planning how to do it: 50%
  • Committing to someone that you will do it: 65%
  • Having a specific accountability appointment with someone you’ve committed to 95%

Taking action towards a goal will increase your probability of success by 50%, but when you have a specific appointment with someone you’ve committed to, it’s a 95% probability you will stick to the commitment. Over the last 24 years of working in health and fitness, I’ve seen this be true for my clients. They get results when they have a structured program that holds them accountable.

My goal is to help you get to your goal weight while empowering you with the tools and knowledge you need to be successful when your schedule and life feel inconsistent.
